History
  • The Early Years
  • The MacArthur Chess Club began in the 1970s with a team that competed and won our first trophy in a local HCA event. Little is known about these young men, except that their efforts led to the creation of the first strong team in 1979 under the leadership of Sammy Ross. The team grew in size and strength, earning area recognition.
  • Mr. Durham builds Excellence
  • In 1981, Mr Frank Durham took over as the sponsor of the MacArthur Club and led them for four great years. A strong player himself, Mr. Durham's teams were respected throughout the area for their strong level of play, often winning many team awards and taking 15 to 20 players to events.
  • The Tradition continues
  • Since1985, the MacArthur Chess Club sponsor is by Mr Bruce Donohoe. In these years, the club has continued to prosper through hard work and much fun. In 1990, anchored by Anthoney Piccola, Frank Carm and Team Captain Paul Shimek, the Generals captured the Texas Scholastic Team Championship for the first time. (It was our first visit to the contest.) We repeated as Champions in 1994 behind the strong play of Jose Guerra and Anthony Soto and led by Glen Boudreaux and Paul Carrizales, again took top honors at the 1996 State meet. The tradition continues today as the team earned its 100th event trophy for Mr. Donohoe at the 1998 State Chess contest in Austin on March 15.
